Who loves road trips? You probably know all about this if you’ve proudly set up your 4WD with caravan or camping trailer, and all the electrical gadgets you’ll need for leisurely camping along the countryside.
I have to admit that one of the things I love to indulge in is the open road with its open sky right across the land of Oz. This year I’ve been to Glen Innes, NSW which was just breathtaking. And there was a time when I took the liberty to drive across the land with my toddler about 6 times.
There is nothing that compares to the endless scenery of greenery that whizzes past you as you push the pedal to the floor. Flocks of birds flying up ahead and over you. Skies that change shape and colour as the hours roll on. And a road that keeps you steadily gripping the wheel in case a kangaroo might jump across the highway. All of it is fascinating to me and as tiring as a road trip can be, it’s worth every minute of beauty.
On my road trip up to Mackay that year I had an hour to go before getting into Rockhampton. I knew that I would be up for a break at that point but the little one had other ideas. She was tired of sitting in her carseat and made it very clear that she needed a break in the that very minute. I took a turn to the left and discovered a lovely little town called Calliope.
All we did there was sit down at a little café and enjoyed some coffee & cake (as we ladies like to do) but the people-watching I was able to indulge in was amazing. I could learn the entirety of the little town’s human face just by watching the people around us. People were talking and laughing, joking and telling stories, like they had all known each other for a very long time.
Although there has been a recent trend in Brisbane with many bringing their little dogs along to the cafes and the markets, some 4 years ago this was not a thing to be seen. I was taken by the fact that somebody had brought their brand new little puppy to the shopping complex at Calliope and most people stopped to coo and wonder at the puppy. I mused about the fact that this form of closeness between people does not exist in big cities such as BrisVegas. As the people stopped to ooh and ahh over the puppy, all of a sudden the puppy made an escape as he decided he needed to complete a very important mission in one of the stores. When I overheard about the details of this grand mission, I was mortified!
However, I was to discover that my reaction was merely a city-esque reaction because everybody ELSE seemed to have such great fun laughing heartily about the situation.
I learned that there are a lot of things that we take far too seriously in this life. There was no harm or malice in what had transpired. The store owner was, furthermore, happy to sort out the situation herself, which flabbergasted me!
In the end, as I let go of the prejudices that are supposed to keep everybody safe and happy, I could really see the funny side to the story and I was thankful that an unexpected turn in my journey had led me to a few unexpected laughs.
